As Brazil Takes World Sporting Stage, International SOS Offers Travel Tips for Upcoming Events

In the wake of this year’s Confederations Cup, travelers are planning ahead for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Games

San Diego, Calif. -- As global sports fans reflect on Brazil's hosting of the 2013 Confederations Cup, many travelers are already preparing trips to the South American nation for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Games. Overall, the events are expected to have an enormous positive impact on Brazil's economy.

However, as companies, business travelers, and tourists make initial plans to descend on Rio de Janeiro and elsewhere, International SOS, the world's leading medical and security services company, encourages potential travelers to look at the health and safety aspects of what should prove to be an exciting, worthwhile event.

"Traveling to Brazil for the World Cup or Summer Games can be once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many sports fans," said Robert L. Quigley, MD, D.Phil., Regional Medical Director, International SOS. "But along with the general tips we typically provide—like proper planning, staying connected to folks back home, health monitoring, road safety, and vigilance against crime—there are several points to keep in mind as they specifically relate to Brazil."

International SOS offers the following advice to travelers heading to Brazil:

Health
The events will cause a huge influx of people over an expansive geographic range—in many areas that aren't accustomed to so much international traffic. So it's important to understand that health care quality varies considerably across Brazil—and each region has its own challenges.

It's also essential to prepare for tropical diseases, as much of Brazil will be hot and humid during this time of year. These are less of an issue in places like Rio and Salvador, but if one ventures off the beaten path in the north—around Fortaleza or Recife—malaria and yellow fever become a risk.

Roads
It's not a good idea for those unfamiliar with Brazil's roads and driving habits to rent a vehicle and drive themselves. Flying is the safest way to travel between matches and events, and tickets are likely to be expensive, so plan accordingly.

Safety
At sporting events there will always be hooligans and there will always be petty crime. So attendees must be vigilant. Always be aware of your surroundings. Vary your routes as you travel to and from your hotel. Always keep your hotel door secured.

The events will be closely guarded and controlled by security forces, but large crowds around other festivals may not be so secure. If approached and demands made for your wallet, purse, cash or other valuables, it's best to give up the items.

Be aware
Always be aware that, as a tourist, you are easily recognized as a potential target.

"For those travelers who might not be as seasoned or as savvy," Dr. Quigley continued, "these tips can make the difference between a great experience and one you'll never forget—for the wrong reasons."
