International SOS Poll Gauges Attitudes and Practices when it Comes to Promoting Security Awareness for Women

Poll finds organizations are increasingly providing specialized training and briefings for women

San Diego, Calif. -- Female travel safety has made international headlines recently, including assaults during the Egypt uprising and a high-profile bus attack in India. These events have given rise to a range of questions: What can female travelers do to prepare and protect themselves? How can their companies enable them to not only survive the trip or assignment, but also thrive?

International SOS, the world's leading medical and security services company, found that many organizations are addressing these issues, including providing specialized pre-travel training. The results came from a recent webinar, "Promoting Security Awareness for Women," the first of a two-part "Safe and Savvy Summer Travel Series" focusing on traveler health and security during the busy summer season.

The poll found that:

  • Thirty-four percent of organizations that responded provide women travelers with specific advice or guidelines as related to personal safety when traveling;
  • Of those who do not provide specific advice or guidelines, 92 percent said there is value in such a program;
  • Eighty-two percent of respondents said they do not think women in their organization would feel patronized of the organization provided them with female-specific travel safety advice.

"It's encouraging to see that protecting female travelers and providing specialized training is on the radar of many organizations," said Alex Puig, Regional Security Director for International SOS and Control Risks. "Traveling to new and different places should be a good experience, and pre-trip preparation helps take some of the anxiety and stress out of the equation."

The second part of the complimentary "Safe and Savvy Summer Travel Series" is set for 1 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday, Aug. 20. Women who travel internationally and anyone who manages or is responsible for employees overseas will benefit from this webinar, including those in the areas of medical, security, human resources, business continuity, risk management, travel, HSE and legal.
